International Festival and Oktoberfest at Ariel-Foundation Park

MOUNT VERNON – Head out to Ariel-Foundation Park Saturday, Oct. 14, to celebrate and explore a variety of European cultures through music, dance performances and food at the International Festival, happening from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., and Oktoberfest, with concerts at 4 and 7:30 p.m.

The entertainment schedule for the International Festival includes bagpipers Mark Hedge, Gary McCutchen and Ginny Cameron at 10 a.m.; Mount Vernon Nazarene University Collegians Chorale at 11 a.m.; Bradford Academy of Dance will present French ballet terms at noon; Cate Blair-Wilhelm offers Readers’ Theatre at 12:30; and the Mount Vernon Players will present a variety of fairy tales at 1 p.m. Educational booths and vendors will also be available throughout the day.

Food vendors include Thomas Concessions with European style food including kraut balls, pirogi, bratwurst and more, and Ferrari Italian Bakery with Italian pastries and sweets. Beer and wine will be available for purchase.

The day will culminate with concerts from Jim Frady and “Froede Katzen” from 4-6 p.m. and polka legend Fred Ziwich and his International Sound Machine at 7:30 p.m.

Fred Ziwich is one of the most well-known names and faces in the polka scene from the Cleveland area. The International Sound Machine is one of the most versatile bands that you will ever hear. The concert will feature a variety of all polka styles, delivered in a somewhat scholarly way.

Ziwich is a respected as a multi-instrumental musician, bandleader, studio musician, music arranger and more. Among his accomplishments is his induction into the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame in 2010, a Grammy Nominee in 2007, German-American Citizen of the Year for 2007, plus twice winning Annual Award for “Recording of the Year.”

Admission is free, however contributions for the Free Summer Concert Series will be accepted. Free seating is available, or you are welcome to bring your own lawn chairs. No outside food or beverages may be brought into the Event Center. Pets and smoking are prohibited in the event center and within the fenced area surrounding it.
