Mount Vernon Fire Under Investigation

On February 2 at 7:10 pm, the Mount Vernon Fire Department was dispatched to a 2 story residential duplex fire at 800 E. Vine Street. The MVFD arrived on scene with a Command vehicle, two Engines and a Medic. Mutual aid was received from College Twp. Fire Department.

The upstairs resident smelled and saw smoke coming into his apartment and found the fire. He went downstairs using the exterior stairs to find the downstairs apartment front room on fire and called 911.

On scene, MVFD found smoke and fire coming from the first story of the home. At the time of the fire, the residents living in the downstairs apartment were not home. Firefighters made an offensive attack and were able to contain the fire to one room of the home; however, there was smoke damage to the rest of the home. There were three dogs in the apartment, two survived and one dog was found deceased. The Red Cross was called in to assist the displaced residents with shelter. Fire Prevention Officer Terry Davis is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
