The Centerburg Trojans Boys High School Basketball team started off well in their home debut Tuesday Night against Berne Union but a big run by the Rockets and a scoring drought doomed the Trojans in a 58-44 loss.
The Trojans started quick on a bucket by Carter Jones, a 3 by Hayden Sutton and a 2 by Hayden Hankinson and led 7-0 almost 4 minutes into the game. The Rockets got on the board for the first time with a 3 by Brock Unger. Hankinson would answer with a 2 and 2 free throws to respond. Hankinson also had an and one near the end of the quarter that helped the Trojans to a 16-9 lead after one.
In the second quarter Chase McCartney and Chase Blevins each scored to cut the Trojans lead to 16-14 with 650 to go in the half. Morgan Mead got a two to go to make it 18-14 Trojans with 6 minutes to go in the half. After a Mead 3 extended the lead to 9 Zane Mirgon was fouled on a three and hit 2 of 3 for the Rockets. That started a 10-2 run to end the half. Centerburg led 25-24 at the break.
In the third Centerburg extended their lead on a Jones 3 and a Morgan Mead 3 to make it 31-24 Centerburg with 605 to go in the quarter. Mirgon and Blevins scored back to back buckets before Sutton hit a three for Centerburg to extend the Trojans lead to 34-28 at the 435 mark. Mirgon followed with back to back triples and Baron Dobbins got a two to go to give Berne Union a 38-36 lead after three.
The run for the Rockets continued into the 4th. Unger hit a three followed by a McCartney 2 and another Unger 3 and it was 46-36 Berne Union with 433 to go in the game. Hayden Hankinson hit a free throw that ended a 16-0 run. Dobbins would follow up with 4 straight points and McCartney got a pair at the charity stripe to give Berne Union a 52-39 lead with 106 to go. The Trojans Jones hit a three with 58 seconds left to trim the lead to 10 for the Rockets. The basket was the Trojans first field goal since the 435 mark of the 3rd quarter.
The Trojans were led by Jones 12 points and 9 rebounds while Hankinson also had 12. Unger scored 15 while McCartney to 13 and Mirgon scored 12 points.
Centerburg falls to 1-1 on the season.
