On January 13 at 12:25 am, the Mount Vernon Fire Department was dispatched to a residential odor of smoke at 1575 Yauger Road. Captain 491 was first on the scene and saw fire inside the apartment window. The MVFD arrived on scene with a Command vehicle and two Engines. Mutual aid was received from College Township and Fredericktown EMS.
The fire was contained to the apartment bedroom where one civilian casualty was found. Other surrounding apartments were evacuated and the residents were assisted by the Red Cross until they were allowed back in their apartments later in the early morning hours.
There were working smoke alarms in the apartment. The State Fire Marshall is working in conjunction with MVFD Investigator Terry Davis to determine the cause of the fire.
